Funchal Reportedly Sold for Scrap

The classic Portuguese ship Funchal was, according to the Greek shipbroker Anchor Shipbroking, picked up in auction by scrap dealers, who bought it for an undisclosed amount and are expected to take it to Turkey, or to India for dismantling this year, by towing. The passenger ship will come be picked up in Lisbon as is - it has not been revealed, whether it is Aliaga or Alang.

In the same month that celebrates 60 years since its launch, Funchal thus receives this bad news, reaching the end of a glorious career. Launched in 1961 by the Helsingor Skpsvaert shipyards in Denmark, for the Empresa Insulana de Navegação (EIN) with a design by Rogério de Oliveira, the ship carried the same designation throughout its life. At the time of its delivery, Funchal was the largest passenger ship ever built in Denmark.

Throughout his career, he also operated for CTM - Companhia Portuguesa de Transportes Marítimos -, for Classic International Cruises (Arcalia Shipping) and for Portuscale, more recently, between 2013 and 2015. The ship has been in lay-up, in Lisbon, since January 2015, when it completed its last commercial trip so far. It was acquired in public auction by Signature Living in 2018, with plans to take it to England, but it eventually never materialized and the company in the meantime went bankrupt, which led to this auction, on 29 January 2021. O clássico navio português Funchal foi, de acordo com o shipbroker grego Anchor Shipbroking, arrematado em leilão por sucateiros, que o adquiriram por quantia não revelada e o deverão levar até à Turquia, ou à Índia para desmantelamento já este ano, por via de reboque, que virá buscar o paquete a Lisboa - também não foi revelado, se se trata de Aliaga ou Alang.

No mesmo mês em que celebra 60 anos desde o seu lançamento, o Funchal recebe assim esta má notícia, chegando ao fim de uma gloriosa carreira. Lançado em 1961 pelos estaleiros de Helsingor Skpsvaert na Dinamarca, para a Empresa Insulana de Navegação (EIN) com projeto de Rogério de Oliveira, o navio ostentou a mesma designação durante toda a sua vida. À data da sua entrega, o Funchal foi o maior navio de passageiros alguma vez construído na Dinamarca.

Ao longo da sua carreira, operou ainda pela CTM - Companhia Portuguesa de Transportes Marítimos -, pela Classic International Cruises (Arcalia Shipping) e pela Portuscale, mais recentemente, entre 2013 e 2015. O navio esteve em lay-up, em Lisboa, desde Janeiro de 2015, em que finalizou a sua última viagem comercial até então. Foi adquirido em hasta pública pela Signature Living em 2018, com planos de o levar para Inglaterra, mas não chegou a sair do sítio e a empresa entretanto abriu falência, o que levou a este leilão, de 29 de Janeiro de 2021.
